The Eco-Friendly Ideal Home

31 October 2010

Having an eco friendly house is becoming much more important for us today, not only for environmental reasons but also so that we can run our homes much more efficiently, enabling us to cut unnecessary costs. In order to show us that any home can be made more environmentally friendly, this month the Ideal Home Show (11th March – 27th March) is displaying a replica of the famous Coronation Street’s Ken and Deidre Barlow’s Victorian terrace house, and then next to it the same house but updated with everything you need to make it more eco-friendly. It has been named “The Ideal Home Refit”.

So how easy is it to make your home more sustainable? Here are just some of the ideas that you will see being demonstrated at the Ideal Home Refit on how to improve your home’s eco friendliness. It can be anything from using Forest Friendly Timber floors, to the more obvious use of quality double glazed windows and doors (something that should also be considered when choosing a DIY conservatory). Quick fixes include using low energy light-bulbs, which use 80% less energy than normal bulbs, and the use of energy monitors. Other ideas include using woollen carpet coupled with rubber underlay which has been recycled from used car tyres, roof top solar panels, a recycled kitchen made from reclaimed pallets and the benefits of using under floor heating. Many of these eco-friendly ideas can be incorporated into planning your conservatory too.
