Is DIY Really In Decline?

A recent Home Improvement Survey of 2,000 people by AA Home Rescue has shown that Do-It-Yourself home improvement is fast diminishing. The survey showed that gadgets such as computers, phones, ipods etc are taking over the modern man’s spare time, with these gadgets being more of a signal of his masculinity than DIY. The survey also illustrated that skills are less likely to be passed down from generation to generation and in 2010 only 44% of men learnt home improvement skills from their fathers compared to over 70% in the 1970s. If this trend continues, this will go down to 20% in the next twenty years.

DIY On The Rise?

On the other hand, reports are showing that due to the still rather slow economic climate, the housing market is still very sluggish with Rightmove.co.uk predicting a further 5% fall in prices. With limited funds and a necessity to sell, research suggests that this will in fact, encourage people to do up their properties to make them more attractive to buyers thus fuelling the DIY sector. And even if they are not desperate to sell, they may be in a position where they are unable to afford to move, so with limited funds, DIY home improvements maybe an attractive option to make their homes more homely.
