DIY Conservatories On The Continent

30 November 2010

DIY Conservatory in FranceConservatories are so widely available and appreciated in the UK it is perhaps surprising that they do not enjoy the same level of popularity on the Continent.

Centurion have supplied several conservatories to customers who have properties in northern France and want to enjoy the benefits of a conservatory but who have been unable to find a suitable product locally.

Europeans tend to prefer the open verandah type construction - marvellous during hot weather and useful in keeping off the odd summer shower but without the provision of a year-round extra room offered by a traditional conservatory. Northern France enjoys it's share of wonderful weather, but our customer wanted to create an permanant room (perhaps even as an extra bedroom for all those visitors!) rather than a logia type shelter, and nothing suitable was available in Normandy. It was cheaper and easier to purchase a custom-designed conservatory from us in the UK and transport across the Channel to than to try and construct anything similar from local materials.

You can see from the site photograph where the conservatory is to be installed against the beautiful old stone wall of the original house. Note the unusual construction, where the customer has build a supporting wall at 90° to the main house rather than the more traditional lean-to running along the house wall. This allowed the conservatory to project further out into the garden along the property boundary, with the main view from inside looking across the garden.

Continental DIY ConservatoryOur own drivers were jumping at the prospect of an international trip, but this customer was in the process of refurbishing his second home and was used to loading materials into a van and taking the ferry so he had the conservatory delivered to his UK base in Somerset and arranged his own transport to France. We do also have excellent contacts with international haulage specialists and would be happy to arrange for delivery direct to site if required.
