Conservatory Blinds - Part 1

28 February 2011

Conservatory blinds not only add style and colour to your DIY Conservatory, but also allow you to enjoy your conservatory in both summer and winter. Where used, they can reduce the build up of heat in the summer by reflecting the sun away from the glass and in winter they can be used to reduce the amount of warm air escaping. As well as this they can protect furniture and other equipment that you may have in your conservatory from damage from the sun, so can actually prove to be very economically to the home!

One option, when choosing your blinds, is to opt for a solar reflective backing. This will reflect the sun and therefore be more effective in keeping your conservatory cool in the summer. Materials which have solar reflective backing generally claim to have a solar reflection of 85%. If you don’t opt for the solar reflective material be aware that the darker the colour of the blind the more heat they are likely to retain.

There are many styles, colours and materials to choose from with the main styles being:

  • Standard pleated
  • Special solar reflective lightweight blinds
  • Pinoleum
  • Roller Blinds
  • Venetian blinds
  • Drapes

In the next few articles we will discuss the merits and limitations of each style, allowing you to make an informed decision on which ones to opt for.
