A Guide to Conservatory Prices
05 September 2013If you’ve been thinking of getting a conservatory, but haven’t yet done so, it’s probably because you’re concerned at how much it is likely to cost. Just as with any product or service, prices vary and will ultimately depend on your choice. There are a number of factors to consider.
Variety of styles
There are several different styles of conservatory, some of which will be more suited to your property than others. Regency conservatories, sometimes known as Georgian, have gable ends, which can be quite attractive, particularly if this is mirrored by your property, and their ridged roofs are an additional interesting feature. Edwardian conservatories can complement both modern and older buildings very well; they have a rectangular footprint, which maximises available space as opposed to Victorian conservatories, which have bow fronts. Although the angular aspect of the Victorian conservatory limits the positioning of furniture, it lends the structure a pleasing period aspect which is particularly suitable for older houses. As well as choosing one, or a combination, of these styles, it’s possible to have the conservatory constructed in an uncomplicated lean-to style or as a corner-infill - between two supporting walls of the house - as well as in more complex forms, such as with a ‘P’ or ‘T’ shaped footprint.
Size of structure
The size of conservatory you get will depend on several factors, such as the amount of ground space that is actually available, the style of conservatory you select and the shape of footprint you want. Additionally, you probably already have a plan for what furniture you would like to put in the conservatory and this should also inform your selections. You may have to settle on a compromise between the size and features you want and the budget you have available to you.
Additional features
All conservatories come with a range of options. The level of ornamentation can vary considerably, particularly on the older-style conservatories, such as the Victorian. Obviously, plainer adornments would cost less than highly ornate alternatives. As well as the range of cosmetic features available, other aspects, such as heating, construction materials and the kind of floor that will be installed will affect the total cost of the job.
Self build
Regardless of the size and style of conservatory, the costs will be considerably less if you opt for a DIY conservatory, made and delivered in flat-pack form by the experts, ready for you to assemble. This prevents you from incurring labour costs, which are likely to be significant. Even if you are not confident enough in your DIY skills to undertake the entire project, you may decide to have the flooring completed by the company, leaving you with a relatively simple construction task. You will still end up paying considerably less than if you have the whole job completed by professionals. If you are considering this option, it's a good idea to recruit some willing volunteers before committing yourself to a purchase.
Range of prices
It is obviously not possible to give a definitive price, given the very wide variety of options, but it is possible to explain how the range of prices can be affected. For example, whatever quote you were to receive for a conservatory to be planned, constructed and fitted by a company, if you decided to take a DIY approach, it is entirely possible that you would be able to halve the total cost without sacrificing any of your chosen features. When you consider the positive impact a conservatory can have on the value and appearance of your property, the overall expense is put into perspective. However, if you are capable of taking on the task of constructing a flat-packed conservatory, the potential for saving such a considerable amount of money seems far too good an opportunity to waste.
